International Centre for Chemical Safety and Security &
Chlorine Institute Sign MoU To Improve Chlor-alkali Safety and Stewardship
Warsaw, Poland and Arlington, VA (October 14)
The International Centre for Chemical Safety and Security (ICCSS) and The Chlorine Institute (CI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly upgrade practices and policies, develop and conduct training programs and voluntary initiatives, and share expertise and best practices to enhance chlor-alkali chemical safety, security and stewardship worldwide.
ICCSS Board President Krzysztof Paturej and CI President Frank Reiner explained, “The chemical industry plays a key role in establishing safe, secure, and sustainable practices to protect workers and communities from the release of toxic industrial chemicals and promoting the peaceful uses of chemistry. CI and ICCSS share mutual interests in the fields of education, research, and training related to chlor-alkali chemical safety throughout the product lifecycle. By working together, our organizations and their members will continue to improve safety, security and product stewardship.”
Under the MoU, CI will be a partner in the Global Chemical Safety and Security Summit and Global Chemical Safety and Security Fair to be held in Kielce, Poland, 18-20 April 2016 (www.chemss2016.org). Mr. Reiner joined the Program Committee of Chemss2016 and the Institute will help prepare and manage a program activity during Chemss2016. This effort may encompass a training event, workshop on chlorine properties and emergency response or sharing of best practices to help improve the safety, human health and environmental protection performance of chlor-alkali producers, packagers, distributors, and users. CI will promote Chemss2016 among its members, including a direct website link.
In addition, ICCSS and CI agreed to share chlor-alkali product best practices and capacity building activity and materials. CI will offer its publications and training materials for ICCSS’ use and dissemination free of charge, and a variety of additional activities are under consideration.
“The global nature of today’s chlor-alkali industry warrants a global perspective on safety, security and stewardship,” said Messrs. Paturej and Reiner. “The MoU reflects the chlor-alkali industry’s commitment to do the right things for the communities, workers, and customers that depend on it.”
