Project Overview: MUNIMAP, an acronym for the initiative, is a pioneering project co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg Europe programme. It is designed to activate, accelerate, and coordinate national efforts towards remediation of the Baltic Sea's and Skagerrak historical contamination by both chemical and conventional dumped munitions. The project promises to tackle these challenges without endangering human life or the environment.
Unique Approach: MUNIMAP offers innovative and adaptable strategy. The project will develop a comprehensive roadmap that includes policy recommendations, advanced IT solutions for site prioritization, and the implementation of novel, environmentally friendly methods for munitions remediation. MUNIMAP's pilot activities will cover various stages of remediation, demonstrating a complete and effective process for addressing this critical issue.
Collaborative Effort: MUNIMAP boasts a dynamic international partnership, uniting experts from diverse fields such as science, government, and industry across several nations, including Denmark, Germany, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Norway, and organizations like the Council of Baltic Sea States and HELCOM. This collaborative approach ensures a well-rounded and effective response to the challenges at hand.
ICCSS's Pivotal Role: ICCSS will develop and lead the policy dialogue, ensuring that the project's outcomes, particularly in terms of policy recommendations, are effectively communicated and integrated at the legislative level. Leveraging its extensive experience in global chemical and environmental safety, ICCSS is perfectly positioned to guide this project towards meaningful impact.
ICCSS Future Vision and Call for Cooperation: ICCSS calls for a shift in addressing sea-dumped chemical weapons, moving beyond security and political contexts to focus on their economic, social, health, safety, and environmental impacts. This approach promotes multi-stakeholder, multi-disciplinary cooperation, integrating global efforts within the EU, UN, and other international bodies. The ICCSS initiated Gdansk reference center will be a hub for developing comprehensive legal, policy, and technical solutions for sea-dumped weapons.
