ICCSS delegation participated in a G7 Global Partnership Working Group meeting against the spread of materials and weapons of mass destruction in Berlin, on the 30th September and 1st of October 2015.
The ICCSS Delegation included the coordinators of the Kenya Program on Chemical Safety and Security, Amb. Kalimi Mworia and Professor Geoffrey Kamau.
During the two-day-debate in Berlin, ICCSS delegates contributed to the discussions of the chemical working group on topics concerning the global chemical and ecological safety and security. Amb. Kalimi Mworia and Professor Geoffrey Kamau presented to the G7 community the progress in the implementation of the first working package of the Kenya Program, which was considered by the G7 as a model program for international cooperation in the field of CBRN protection.
Amb. Krzysztof Paturej and Dr. Andrzej Jagusiewicz, with the support of the OSCE and cooperation of the Ukraine Chemists Union (UCU) presented 4 projects within the framework of the Integrated Program on Chemical Safety and Security in Ukraine (ICSSP), which ICCSS coordinates internationally. Those projects included analysis of the current chemical safety and security situation in Ukraine (project carried out thanks to an Italian grant), training program for Ukrainian officials dealing with the transit of chemicals (including customs service and border guards), program on Local Awareness and Responsibility in Chemical Safety and Security, and a project on the implementation of the resolution 1540 (2004) of the UN Security Council in the chemical domain.
The ICCSS Delegation has also introduced and invited the members of the G7 Global Partnership Working Group to join the Global Summit on Chemical Safety and Security and accompanying International Fair, to be organized in April 2016 in Kielce, Poland. The invitation was welcomed by the G7 community. It was noted that, within the framework of the G7 Global Partnership, a modern, comprehensive and integrated initiative like CHEMSS, could become an important and tangible platform in effective responses against CBRN threats.
The ICCSS Delegation has conducted many bilateral meetings and received support on its current programs in Kenya, Ukraine and for the preparations of chemss2016 (www.chemss2016.org), including participants from, inter alia, Germany, US (Department of State, US Department of Homeland Security), Canada, Italy, Norway, EU, OPCW, Interpol, Dow Chemicals.
